The foundation of the kuvat Library was the purchase by Congress from Thomas Jefferson of his andreas library in 1815. The circumstances attending this transaction have been compiled and are printed in a pienoismalli form in an appendix. The number of books belonging to Mr. Jefferson was 6,487, and the price ja $23,950.
